Priority of Work: Green Team to “Shorten the Short List” at August 26 Meeting
The Sustainable Blairstown Green Team will roll up its sleeves on August 26 to establish priorities in the town’s pursuit of its Sustainable Jersey municipal certification. At its July meeting, the group reviewed a short list of activities that could earn the town the 100 points needed for certification. The list of activities included:
- Municipal Energy Audit
- Municipal Carbon Footprint
- Buy Local Programs
- Recycling
- Green Fair
- Community Asset Mapping
- Local Food Production & Gardens
- Sustainable Land Use Pledge
- School Programs and Partnerships
“The group will determine what actions it feels are the most relevant to our community, and in what order it would like to tackle them,” said Environmental Commission member Kevin Doell, who is coordinating the activities of the Green Team. “Some projects can be completed faster than others, while some will require more planning and effort to implement. The key here, however, is that it’s not a race. We’re looking to improve the quality of life here in Blairstown for the long term.”
Another component of the work ahead is to identify project champions, subject matter experts and additional resources available for each of the activities that the group chooses to pursue. For example, there are a number of groups in the town already doing some excellent work in these fields. The Green Team will look to connect with those groups to combine forces and leverage the resources of each group to generate results.
